I am recruiting highly motivated and talented individuals to join my research team at UT Austin starting in Fall 2026. I typically work with students and postdocs with backgrounds in (computational and applied) mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, or related disciplines. The main requirement is mathematical maturity. Experience with mathematical analysis, deep learning libraries, or high performance computing is preferred. There are opportunities for theoretical, algorithmic, or applied research projects.
Inquiries: If you are interested in working with me, you may contact me by email. Your email should explain why you wish to work with me, how your interests align with my research program, and what relevant experience you bring. Due to the volume of emails I receive, I cannot respond to all messages.
Please send all inquiries to: nnelsen [at] oden [dot] utexas [dot] edu
My research team has multiple funded Ph.D. openings at UT Austin. Doctoral students in the Oden Institute's CSEM program will likely be the best intellectual fit. Other options include graduate programs in the Departments of ASE/EM, Mathematics, Statistics and Data Sciences, or Computer Science. I am happy to serve as the advisor to students from other Ph.D. programs at UT Austin as well, provided this is permissible by the home department and our interests align.
Prospective Students
To those who listed my name as a potential Ph.D. advisor on your application, you are encouraged to contact me by email. In your message, please include your CV, recent transcripts, a brief description of your research interests, and why you are interested in working with me.
Current UT Austin Students
Please send me an email that includes what your home Ph.D. program/department is, your CV, recent transcripts, research statement, whether you will need funding or not, why you are interested in working with me, and any other helpful materials you want to share.
I am always interested in collaborating with current postdoctoral colleagues who are already working at UT Austin. Please reach out if you think we have shared research interests.
